There are as many ways to train for and run a sub 3 as there are runners No sessions for me but as many easy miles as I can manage. Sounds as though you have it sorted RRRr. |

4 MP miles at the end of a long run if you don't want to do too many specific MP sessions. It's important to know what that pace feels like when you're fatigued.

Never thought of doing that was postie. I've always done a full MP session when following P&D. I'll be sure to give that a try. Thanks for all the comments. Sounds like I'm on the right track. Will keep you updated on how it goes. |

P&D is a fine schedule but there is a lack of MP sessions scheduled. They do advise trying what I do to a degree when you read it in depth.

RRRrunner I'm aiming for my first sub 3 at Chester this year. I like a hard session followed by an very easy recovery session the following day - with 3 to 4 core sessions a week. I dont have a plan/schedule and think this is actually better - well for me it is anyway. Some runners cant cope without structure and a schedule is perfect for them. I feel the big difference between a 3:30 and a sub 3:00 marathon plan is the long runs, I do some of my long runs almost as a tempo session and others with 8-12 miles at MP - no long slow runs for me! |

Thanks damo, that is basically the way I'm training at the moment for my target autumn half. Though I haven't done any of my long runs (two so far) at any pace they have been slow but taking in a lot of hills as the race I'm doing is very hilly. I'm going to look to incorporate some faster long runs as part of my marathon training come winter. Good luck at Chester; one of my favourite races! |

Training had been going well for Chester until the beginning of this week when I felt a slight glute strain (this problem re occurs when I neglect stretching. one day I will learn!!!). I have been resting since because I know from experience if I continue it will put me out for a further two or three weeks. I tried a for a really steady run this morning and got to the end of the road before sensibly walking back. So frustrating. I will give it another go at the beginning of next week. Still, plenty of time to get back on track I hope?

I had a slight tightness in my hamstring but felt OK, just sore muscles I thought. I ran the Haddington half last week (was club Grand Prix race) and have not been able to run since. Muscle flared up and was limping for a few days, but now on the road to recover. Like Pedro, plenty of time left to get back up to speed. Might try early next week with a few gentle runs. Fingers crossed.
