jda, regarding motivation and effort one is prepared to put in, that surely depends hugely on the individual, their priorties etc. I certainly won't ever win a big event, but there is somewhere between "it's not the winning, it's the taking part" and Mo Farah! I have won some age placings (where there were not many people and it was an obscure race and no one else turned up ;-) ), I can compete with my club mates, I compare myself with those at my own level and try and race them etc. So I think we can "win" things even if we're not winning VLM.

But mostly for me it's because it's my "main" hobby. I used to mountain bike and I would do that as well as I could. When I played rugby, I did that as well as I could. I used to sail and I would do that as well as I could. And now I run, so I do it as well as I can. Is that not everyone's goal? :-) G

I agree totally. 'Winning' all depends on where you at. I am...still...aiming to run under 2.30 one day, or as close as I can get. In the scheme of things this would make me a pretty average club runner 20 years ago. Even the guys running 2.15-18 aren't winning much when the faster Kenyans turn up...the motivation to train hard and explore your limits comes from somewhere else, somewhere deeper I think.

Interesting posts today - my motivation is to better myself. Run faster, build a stronger body and fulfil the aims I've imposed on myself. I'm a very driven person and for my teens/ Uni life I devoted that to the pursuit of academic goals. Then I realised I was fat, unfit and it didn't matter if you got distinctions for your degree you still do the same job. So from that developed a desire to channel this into other aspects of life.

I've never seen myself as naturally talented - I have to work hard for my running goals and this will be my 10th year of running - 7th year of marathons. My training has had to change as my job has changed and I suspect I may only run another 3 maybe 4 marathons before I want to pursue other aspects of life... and this time I've followed a plan - fairly strictly for the first time. I do feel pangs of worry when high mileage is talked about as I absolutely believed I can't run a good time without 75mile weeks, hopeful I can prove myself wrong.....

Right got a marathon pace session to do......

Mileage and natural talent. I'm hitting 40 mile weeks now with a view to averaging 50mpw before marathon training starts to improve my marathon performance.

I follow the 2:45 thread which I find very informative. Not so much their current raining but their mileage progression year on year.

I did intend to train a little more this time round with a view to some marginal gains but other things got in the way and I've actually done less. However something is going right, I just did the same session (4 x 10 min threshold) some 10s/km faster than this time last cycle. Main difference may be a weekly interval session and/or a proportion of off-road running which seems to be building a bit of strength.

Bazo, prior to taking up running I spent a decade doing little more than cycling to work each day (occasionally longer rides). I would agree I do seem to have a bit of a physiological aptitude for marathons compared to other things, but not to a huge degree, and at 80kg my build is always going to be a bit of a handicap, so I'm not tempted to take it too seriously. I sort of got the desire to really test my physical limits out of the way as a student when I took rowing seriously for a while and reached the heady heights of scraping in to my university 2nd eight...that was 6 days training and several double sessions each week, which left little time and energy for anything else!

boab - yes Nicola D.

I think its perfectly possible to train hard (doesn't necessarily mean big mileage though) and get the most from yourself without taking it too seriously.

Sounds like you are doing some great training jda - the wonderful thing about the marathon is that there are loads of ways to train successfully for it and its just about working out what is right for you :)

57.5 Degrees of Pain
I manage 10 runs a week, but that is called commuting rather than serious training! The lighter nights give more options to meander home over sand dunes and through the woods for variety and more mileage however. Certainly the secret of success as you get older is to stay uninjured, so your plan sounds pretty sensible jda.

57.5, are you "Tim from Nairn"? ;)

Just listened to the Marathon Talk podcast, thought it might be you.

TC, there comes a point, in my opinion, that even mixing up running and cross training can be way too much. Somone might only run 5 days of the week but when they are squeezing in 80+ miles into that 5 days and confounding it with large amounts of other high intensity XT the body will give up eventually.
