Jam butties are always scoffed when they are at CPs before anything other than coke & pork pies. NE - I think it must be the female physiology. K can go all day on a sip of water and a jelly baby, while I'm eating anything I can get my hands on. Saves a lot of time at CPs if you don't need a proper stop for food/drink. |

Physiology of the individual maybe but nothing particular to do with being female Flanker. I'm the same as Bobs and K. I think over time you can also train your body to need much less. In my case much of that I think came from running long stuff (e.g. mountain marathons) before the carrying of fluids (i.e. pre-camelbak etc.) and energy (e.g. gels + bars) was quite so easy and sports drinks were generally disgusting. By neccessity you had to function on less. |

ff, I'm sure you're right to some extent, and to be fair I do consume far less during events now than I used to. On events were you have to be self sufficient I can get by on far less if I have to carry it! However I'm also pretty sure that there is genetic disposition involved too, just as there is with all other aspects of athletic performance. Or it could just be that I'm a glutton |

I am also a glutton... Re Tailwind: my club mate Chris who I crewed for at this year's whw race (finished in 20:21) has just run a pb at Berlin mara of 2:59:06. One month after a fast Devil race. So I've ordered some so I can be a fast as him. |

NE, totally agree I think like any aspect of physical performance there has to be a genetic input that defines how well you can train that element but like most elements (particularly ones where you are weak) there is much you can do to improve it. I'd also suggest that in a situation where food/fuel is regularly available there is no advantage in any particular approach (the time loss unless you continually sit down for a 3 course meal rather than adopt a doggy bag approach is marginal). The key is finding an approach that works for you. Mrs Shanksi, I'm a tailwind user and find it really works for me. I've consistently finished races stronger since I started using it BUT mountain fuel may be just as good. I haven't tried it because I found something that worked and I've stuck with it. Observation and conversation with the likes of NE + Bobs would suggest there is not a lot to choose between them. |
