run free
RD/Organisers just need to make it clear about "Leave No Trace". The ultras/marathons that penalise participants hardly have a litter problem!

Velociraptor
I'd like a policy of litter-droppers being summarily shot. I'd be happy to pull the trigger and drag the carcasses to the pick-up point.

Its not just races that cause the litter of empty gel wrappers etc alas. I've seen plenty when merely out running around the local area which would predominantly be from cyclists C2Cing being i am generally running along the route of it.

In ultra marathon news i er entered the 2016 TP100 last night so all i need now is a quick physio appt so i can see what the feck i did to my foot a few week ago

To be absolutely clear, I think runners are in the minority when it comes to littering. A quick look at the summit of Scafell Pike after a big National 3Ps weekend will tell you all you need to know, the debris enroute from where the route starts in Wasdale is also pretty substantial (and tragic).

RunningInCircles - Big Ones ;-)
I have to wonder what is so hard...
I have a pocket on my race pack specifically for rubbish. It has a velcro flap, which is why I use it, knowing full well wrappers can easily escape in the wind.
I doubt that is what it is designed for, but it is in my mind :-)

I know it is easy to drop things by accident. I have recovered hats/gloves/maps etc whilst out and about. You can tell those are accidental.

That said, there is a core attitude at play I think.
I see it in the kids I teach (not all) where there is an attitude of "that's the cleaners job" i.e. it's not my problem. Grow up and take that out of towns and you get what many of you describe.

As a visible barefoot runner, I sometimes train at school, I do my best to counter that and they can at least see why litter on the field might bug me. However, I'm not sure there is enough emphasis on social responsibility from any direction to counter the large numbers that would still litter...

RunningInCircles - Big Ones ;-)
Lol.

That did sound a bit funny :-)

They find everything an abstract concept that they struggle to comprehend until they see it for themselves. Perhaps that's an age thing :-)

Talking about running barefoot would mean nothing to them. Seeing someone do it regularly is very different.

That said, wouldn't the leave no trace thing be cool if you could take it as far as actually being invisible :-)
