THe Spine race terrifies me but that is because of the weather, rather than the route necessarily. The T184 and other races in that series are very tempting though. :)

I'm sorry RotJ, I don't want to sound in the least it disparaging, but if the idea of the Spine race scares you then you have not fully assmilated the implications of doing JOGLE. Really.

If you have chance, go and see the Berghaus BritRock docufilm thingy and see how Steve Birkinshaw dealt with his Wainwright challenge, that should give you a rough idea of what you're lining yourself up for - and Steve is an elite athlete with year's of experience under his belt, a Dragon's Back win and pain tolerance forged in the Bowels of Hell.

I'm with RotJ, the Spine, being held in the depths of winter across some of the most challenging terrain is seriously hard core.

While they are both epic events, I'm not sure you can really compare the two. JOGLE could be run, The Spine is mostly a winter expedition where people seem to walk far more than they run. That's part of the reason I've pulled out of it for now - if I want to do a long winter walk (and I do) I can do it when I'm older and don't have running targets to compromise.

The Dragon's Back has far more appeal - I'm just hoping it's on again in 2016.

I'm not suggesting it's anything otherwise. And the JOGLE is not?

Actually flanker's post gives me food for thought: If I could spare the time, I would definitely have a crack at the Spine, the winter conditions don't put me off in the slightest. However, I think JOGLE would probably be beyond me ...... I suppose it's all pretty subjective.

I definitely want a shot at the Spine at some time - I love winter walking and mountaineering so love the idea of it. However the time and money it will take, and the impact it will have on my 2015 UTLD A race through loss of training time and the need for post-event recovery race will be too big, so I've sacrificed my deposit.

The downside, other than the loss of deposit, is that it means I can't go gear shopping for all that sexy lightweight kit :-(

The Spine is one of those things that I've looked at and reflexly thought, "Nah, no way," then looked at again and thought, "Actually ... if this and if that and if it wasn't for the other, I could probably have a reasonable crack at that." But I wouldn't attempt the Big Spine without seeing how I fared on the Little Spine first.

I've done some thinking about what it was about JOGLE that captured my imagination so much and I think it boils down to two things. 1) The trails and 2) its a journey, not a race. So, thanks to Vrap pointing me in the direction of the T184 Ive come up with a more realistic target and Ive roped a friend in with me. Run the path over a period of 10 days early next autumn. I think that ticks the same boxes while being a lot more achievable. Im excited again now :)

That sounds much more civilised and very achievable, RotJ. I hope you enjoy it. And then if you've got a taste for multi-day events the world's yours to travel :)
