I know loads of fat and relatively healthy old folk who haven't done a twitch of exercise since they left school.

These things are often massively over simplified, I think. I know fat people who have lived to a ripe old age. I know skinny folk who have died young. Sure, I don't have controlled samples of 000s of people, but actually, very few of the "studies" that are out there are fully controlled and eliminate all other factors. The human bod is a complicated machine and defies analysis or at least simple conclusions that make good Daily Mail headlines.

Then there are a other, non-physical, factors that seem to affect "health", possibly longevity, and certainly quality of life: happiness, fortitude, spirit, karma, achievement, determination, confidence, support, love... ? :-) G

Indeed, :)G. When you look at the big picture of the things that contribute to healthy survival, exercise is very small print, and diet, provided you've got enough to eat, is also just a tiny factor.

Indeed V'rap, and yes, jono, exactly, poverty vs. wealth is a key indicator. Where you live. Who you associate with (or have to associate with), support networks - lots of key, social aspects. :-) G

mind you we are taking bets on a 43 yr old colleague in work who is 43, over weight and has a spray for a possible heart condition - tests pending apparently - ex HM Forces as well, so who knows how we turn out.

I agree, jono*, and I'd love to be able to say with utter assurance that exercise is all sorts of Good For You and lack of exercise is Worse That Smoking, because I enjoy doing exercise and I'm married to a man who also enjoys doing exercise and it would be nice to think that doing something we enjoy would make us live forever.
