Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I'm surely misunderstanding things here - the Zooms aren't faster than the 4%s are they? Apologies in advance if that sounds like a dumb question!

Yeah I think Gobi meant VFs are the fastest shoes he owns, I took the evidence to mean the VF 4% are better.

SO how do the Zoom Flys compare to a normal average shoe? (Or are they a normal average shoe), and how do they compare to a minimal one? I've been running without cushioning for so long that I'm guessing any kind of cushioning *may* benefit me.

My 1.45 stride in the VF last time out is the longest stride length I've hit in any race of 10k or over. Not by much, but small margins matter.

The big innovation in the VF is clearly the creation of a lightweight high recovery foam. Previously, thick soles were (a) heavy and (b) dissipative meaning all the fastest shoes were as thin as possible while maintaining an acceptable level of cushioning. But now there's not the same incentive to minimise the sole thickness, quite the reverse in fact when runner fatigue is taken into account.

There are limits to sole thickness in jumping events and I'd be open to the possibility of limiting running shoes too if there was any likelihood of shoes getting much taller. There are strict physical limits to how much energy a 3cm sole can possibly store (and therefore return), it's not like one of Pistorius' blades.

So I still run in my Nike Free and there is a difference there as well but sometimes it does just come down to comfort and I like how the free feels when running easy

IMO the ZF is about on a par with other fast race shoes like my adizero adios boost. Ie there's still a big step up to the VF but it's definitely worth looking at for anyone who can't find/afford those. My personal opinion there is based on very little evidence but the analysis published in the NY times gives a similar result.

Here's the NY times article that gleaned the (self-reported) data from strava where the VF's came top and offered average 4% improvement

nytimes.com

It's the Nike streaks that were second to the VFs.... with average 3%...

Oh yeah I forgot about the streak - partly because I've never seen one and don't know what it is - but the ZF is close behind (along with a bunch of other shoes of course).

Gobi ( or anyone else ), would you say that the Zoom Fly Flyknit would be suited to road/towpath type ultras ?
Is there enough stability for when form gets a bit sloppy in latter stages ? I don't pronate, if anything I supinate, but midfoot strike can tend towards a heel strike when legs are a bit knackered.
Currently use Hoka Challenger but the ZF Fk sounds like they might be decent, would just be "shorter" road ultras, up to 40 miles.
