My contract stated that my hours were ‘as the service demands’ and mostly it demanded many more than a normal full-time working week.

I did occasionally stay late , but I was always late the next morning by the same amount of time. Not strictly the same thing but I often invented traffic issues on the M6 when I used to commute to Chorley to a job/boss I really hated. He used to try and get me to make up the time but I'd remind him how we were promised they would never ask us to do that when they shut the office 30 miles closer to home. |

At a previous post they tried the 'you're in a senior role, extra hours comes with the job'. I pointed out that the job role was banded based on the responsibility, knowledge and skill. Every minute extra worked for free was a pay cut. That reminds me, the overtime I did in October hasn't been paid in this payslip. Anticipated as much, so will be telling them on Monday I'm taking it as time off instead, which is what they wanted to avoid. |

So it sounds like um's experience of getting on by working hard is a bit of an anomaly! ![]() ![]() ![]() And yet almost all of us have felt the pressure to work long hours, even if for no recognition, and have felt the guilt if and when not doing so. Corporate culture is so broken. |

IMO the “loyal employee = secure job” equation was ripped up and trashed in the 80s and I never felt an obilgation to set it up again after.

The worst thing for me was seeing people who were deliberately disruptive and undermined honest colleagues getting golden goodbyes where those of us who upheld standards and worked in the best interests of others got a nice thank you. Being ethical didn’t pay well.

During Covid our company was great at telling us to be flexible and make sure we looked after our mental health but it soon reverted back. I’m my own worst enemy but I find my new boss asks for things and it’s always a panic as someone more senior has asked for info. They do recognise what I’m working and tell me to get the time back (absolutely impossible) but I am taking extra at lunchtime to allow me to do a longer run - I need to realign the balance. Again the grade decision will push it at end of year.

And call me cynical, but most people who "get on" do so by being one or more of: loud, self-promoting, arrogant, ignorant, narcissistic, ruthless, psycho or sociopathic, cruel, aggressive and the correlation with any actual work ability is low. And the corporate world encourages and rewards these behaviours through short term goals, financial incentives linked to income not overall benefit (not even profit) etc. Even the more modern bonuses linked to customer satisfaction, colleague satisfaction, corporate responsibility etc. only apply to the middle tier. Top tier, CEOs, CXOs are still hired and rewarded based solely on short term revenue objectives. Imho! ![]() |
