Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

Carefully, especially your lower back. Try doing a Superman stretch and holding it for a few beats then relaxing. Repeat two or three times for one set. Do two or three sets. Build the number of reps over a few weeks.

Alternatively, try dry swimming for a more dynamic movement and to keep more of your core engaged. Start at 15 seconds with 30 seconds recovery and do three reps. Build to a minute with a minute recovery over the course of a few weeks again.

Yet another alternative is a back extension. You need one of those back extension frames but nearly every gym will have one. Lie face down on the rack and pull yourself to a straight position. You can introduce your obliques to a whole new world of suffering on this one by twisting as you rise. Do it carefully.

All the above are lower back exercises. Pick one and do it as part of a session. Don't try more than one in any single session in case of injury. Lower backs and shoulders are easy to mess up which buggers absolutely everything else up for you.

I wouldn't do anything involving extra resistance until you've got your back string enough that you don't feel pain. Any sharp pain is a sign that you've buggered it and should stop what you're doing.

Superman stretch - lie face down with your arms and legs extended and then hyperextend your back so that your legs are arms are raised from the ground. It's horrible and I won't do it because I have a bad back.

See the Core H video for a demonstration of dry swimming. That's even more horrible and I won't do it because I'm a wimp.
