Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Meadowmill had gritted a couple of path crossings yesterday. We don't grit at Stonehaven, we have too much path, it would take a lot of grit.

Raptors Claws are coming to town
Gritting was attempted at a local parkrun yesterday but the high risk area was too extensive.

I suspect some landowners may have a policy of gritting certain areas regardless of parkrun, just for their own policy regarding users of the park - Alton Water is entirely on trail, so gritting isn't so much of an issue but the park authorities will put bark/mulch down in places in very wet weather - they would do this anyway in those areas but as a parkrun team we're able to bring it to their attention during the week if it looks like it might need replacing before Saturday and they are usually very quick to react.

Grit doesn't really work unless it is being trodden in a lot either so if the park paths are not high traffic (apart from parkrun going over them) then it is not going to make that much difference, for the effort put in. I put grit down on my yard this week and even though I've been back and forth along the same path with more buckets of water and nets of hay than I want to think about... it barely had an effect.

I mean it would do something and it might make a second or third lap safer but I can see why parkruns don't do it on an effort cost/benefit basis.

Not sure if they treat the paths here in NL, but I’ve just been for a run mainly on the cycle paths around where I’m staying. Although about -5, the paths and roads were all totally clear with no issues whatsoever.

Big_G, in Utrecht, it didn't rain so there was no black ice but just 5 miles to the West in De Meern, it rained and that made running a difficult task. Maxima Park is North of De Meern and it was very icy there. We went there on Friday to check it out and that was a bit dangerous. My dad, my sis and I are trail runners so we were okay but there was no way you could have run an event there.

I ran a free parkrun on Saturday morning. It was marginally better but the freezing fog didn't help. Some places were fine to run, others were still covered in ice. I was about 4 minutes slower than what I could do on a flat course.

When I had finished at around 8:45, I saw another runner and a man walking towards me. The latter was a local volunteer who waited until 9 to see if any runners showed up to tell them about the cancellation.

Next week, the forecast is 8°C so it should go ahead. I hope you can run a parkrun. It's a very nice route, I enjoyed the run. I hope I can go back another time.

I had thought Strathclyde might have had a chance, as the paths (high use public park) might have been done. However, the weather conditions (snow, immediate rain, freeze) would have mixed any previous gritting and also been impervious to further gritting.

They have previously run an alt course (twice up and down on the adjacent grass) but that weather combination would have worked against that as well, not to mention the difficulty of even reaching the start line.

Ironically, if it had been the preceding conditions of merely several days of constant sub-zero, it could probably have gone ahead.

Hopefully the NYD run can go ahead as usual. It's annually unique, in that the course (out and back u-shape) is run in reverse. "WHAAT? Das ist verboten!" I hear you cry. But in this case, there is a valid reason: no access to the usual parking, but parking available at the other side of the loch.

Not in the sense asked, Heaton Park is currently gritted for the lights festival which benefits the parkrun but not done by the parkrun volunteers.

Was amazed Tollcross cancelled as I’ve ran the alternative in deep snow before, apparently the car park and approach roads were brutal.
