Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I wouldn't ever wear headphones in a race, but has anyone clarified if the new EA rules include bone conducting devices such as Aftershokz? I think the rule states headphones and similar devices.

This is being fairly widely debated on farcebook at the moment. One question repeatedly asked, but not answered is, roughly, "what about a deaf runner, how is their health and safety affected by not hearing marshal's instructions ?"
Any RDs with experience of deaf runners?

We cannot exclude a runner based on a disability.

We can, however, disqualify runners for breaking rules.

The words, 'Reasonable adjustments' come to mind.

yes, I agree with that. But if an RD is saying it's for the runner's safety that they can hear instructions, how are they keeping any deaf runners safe ?

The deafness question was put to a race director on Radio 5 who was getting a grilling about completely correctly DQing a number of runners for headphones the previous day. He basically wiped the floor with the interviewer, firstly being deaf is a disability, someone has not chosen to be unable to hear and someone with this disability will develop more awareness using the other senses and by taking more care. in the race he was the RD for, as it was multiterrain he said that he had catered for deaf runners by arranging that they ran with a partner.

At pace, BSL may not be understood - assuming marshals fluent in BSL were available; still less lip reading. a bit lo tech: signs held up for everyone's information, e.g. 'Cross here'; Move over to the right' - customise as necessary.

A partner would make sense for non-closed roads too. I'm sure we've all been there when a shout of "keep left car/ambulance/lead runner" carries forward down the line and someone with earphones in doesn't hear, so for safety a "guide runner/partner/buddy runner would make sense. Was just wondering if there was any guidance.

I think the guidance is that most rare of commodities with this subject - namely common sense.
