Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I don’t think they’d be allowed to live in Frinton.

They would certainly shake up the Crown Green Bowling Club.

I observe that any minion raising the slightest reservation about Harkonnen plans for conquest either gets a knife slash across the throat or has their face repeatedly bounced off an instrument panel.
As man-management techniques go I would say this hardly encourages frank and open debate.

And just imagine the annual performance reviews. Harkonnen HR must be run off their feet.

Their minion disciplinary policy would have even Darth Vader advising them to dial it down a bit.

American Fiction (on Prime). Excellent acting, good film, though with a slightly odd ending that reminded me of Blazing Saddles. Given the theme of American Fiction, I wasn't sure whether that was a deliberate nod or whether I was reading too much into things. Thoughts on that, anyone?

It was definitely a bit odd and I’m not quite sure it worked with the rest of the film, but the film as a whole had built up sufficient capital for me to give it a pass. I suppose it all played into the “having to write what is sellable as opposed to what you want to write” theme of the movie as a whole.

I’ve seen a lot worse film endings in the past.

For me it was that he is still a slave to capitalism regardless of any critical or financial success, and capitalism will product your work for the biggest profit - see Monk sharing a look at the extra dressed as a slave just in case you don’t get the point.

Also that he was trying to be seen as an author, not a “black author” and in frustration at this, he writes a book of cliches and dies a cliched death, another black victim served up as trauma entertainment by the Hollywood producer,

society doesn’t see him as anything other than another black man despite him saying at one point he doesn’t see race or something similar (and then promptly fails to get a taxi). So maybe his whole life is a fiction?

Tbh there are some class and race points being made - eg their house servant who couldn’t be more of a Mamie character if she tried - who has servants these days except the very affluent?

Maybe the fiction is America itself - the land of opportunity / American dream?

At the Q&A the director said the film was partly inspired by an 80s film called The Hollywood Shuffle which is on my list to watch.

I think it’s a slightly disjointed film but a very promising debut and one that still engages a few months after seeing it.

Thanks Fields. Yes I did wonder about the not-so-subtle slave image at the end. And it definitely reminded me of Hollywood Shuffle a film I'd also recommend.

I have the 100 day cough thing - apart from a lack of sleep as it takes me a long time to get a break in coughs so I can sleep! - I think I’m more or less ok and not full of lurgy any more.

But wondering whether if I should curtail cinema visits for a bit given a) no one else will know that I’m free of lurgy and b) the constant coughing is annoying and off putting everyone including me!

I will be off to a sports match on Saturday and standing on a terrace full of people but that’s open air so a bit different I guess as I can stand in a quieter part of the ground. Different for a small enclosed screen where I can’t move around
