Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

TMW- I am a moderately fit 40yr old bird and my max is 191
The race might be the best place to see a new max- that's where I hit mine, previously it was 181.
I think there is a tendancy ( certainly for me) to sub-consciously hold back when you are trying to set your MHR.

Pammie- Yay! maybe this is the start of a streak for several of us!

Features- yep, I think we might be on the up at last!:-)

Yes TMW as Girlie said- My MHR on the hill test was 179, but I'd already got a higher one doing intervals the week before 186 and then doing the club handicap on Thursday night it went to 187.
I am wearing the HRM tomorrow for my 10k to see if it gets any higher a proper race.
Good Luck :-)

max HR is nothing to do with age of fitness. one of my running club friends who is a bit faster than me has a max of somthing like 160 or 170, my max is 195 yet she is a better runnner.

just back from a 20 mile run which was a killer, I am not a morning person but set my alarm so that I could hav breaky and be out the door at 8am. was ok for the first hour but then had to take frequent walking breaks, it was prob similar weather to FLM07. did not enjoy the run, unfortunatly I was unable to keep HR in the 70-75% range, think it was more like 77%, pace was I think 10.35/mile but cant remember and too much effort to go downstairs and get garmin.

Considering the heat I was quite pleased with the outcome as I had been doing my LSRs at around 10.30/mile and HR 72 ish %. I have been trying to use Chi running a bit so that and perhaps improvements mean that my HR was not raised as much as I would have expected on a day like today.

How were others HR and paces affeccted today?

Hellen I did 19 miles today. I do not run well in heat, at all. Was okay for 14 miles, but then pretty big drift set in, and I was 11 minute miling by the end. VERY hot down here.

thats slow for you hendo, what was your HR for the run?

I kept stopping for short walks on the uphills to let me HR get down to a bit below 70% but it soon shot up again.

Hendo - Well done on doing 19 miles. What time did you get out at?
I start my run today albeit 7.35 miles it was hot, even with a drink on the way round. Did manage whole run at 69%whr, but HR was climbing towards the end.
My pace still the sameish around 6:42 per km average

Hellen - Well done on your run too, the heat will obviously affect HR

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
