My first thought was male HH, but it seemed a bit too to dark and monochromatic, so trying not to make what I saw be what I’d like it to be! But I can’t think of anything else, hence asking. |

Will have a look in the book later what 1st/2nd winter looks like as maybe they’re not so much contrasting light/dark grey.

The reason I said that was because last time I got a good view of one (on Skye), the white rump really stood out as a tell-tale feature.

Yeah. As much as I’d like it to have been, I dint think it was. K has just pointed out that rock dove’s pretty much match that description, which I hadn’t considered due to location. But a feral pigeon showing those characteristics is a good shout. |

Male HH is always smaller than I expect, and this did seem larger and appeared to have longer, straighter tail than a pigeon, and first impression that it wasn’t. But Occam’s razor and all that…

I had a lovely run up the Porter Brook trail in Sheffield today - I got to the stream, thought, "ooh, this looks like good dipper territory," and spotted one seconds later! Lovely Mandarin on the ponds and lots of singing warblers.
