I've got RSPB stickers on my windows to avoid collisions.

Great pic Becca!
Dave - that starling looks v Twin Peaks-esque or maybe Twin Beaks.
I've seen quite a few crows around with open beaks looking like they've got lockjaw. Is it a way of cooling down?

Great you saw the otter, DT, well deserved but love it when creatures turn up when you least expect them

I meant to say I hadn't heard of any otters round here i.e. "near Leicester". Similarly there is a kingfisher known to hang around about a mile and a half from where I live but I've never seen it.
Also meant to say nice pic Dave. I do like starlings, in particular since I heard them compared to rude boys.

becca7, something which helps you see kingfishers is if you learn to recognise the distinctive whistle they often make as they fly. Many times I've heard the sound and turned my head just in time to spot them.

Yes, thanks, I understand that the poor fellows always seem to be looking for their keys. I don't think I've heard this but certainly I listen out for it.

Love the photos, that was quick thinking for the kestrel (hope I have the right bird :-0)
My most unexpected kingfisher was amongst urban newbuild houses by the mill on the river in Bradford-on-Avon,

Yes, a kestrel, ferret. Thanks - inevitably my camera was at the bottom of my bag when the bird started to hover but s/he was there for long enough to get a few shots.
Any kingfisher at all would be good. Apparently they were common at Old Moor last year in around September so I might head back there then.

To compare to the cassowaries, I worked in Niger fro a few months when I first qualified. I landed at 3am and left the capital around 8am to head out to the hospital I was working in. Ten minutes into the journey a Giraffe walked beside the road. I told people who had lived there for decades and they had never spotted (!) one anywhere.
