Here is a picture of the combination room: unicen.cam.ac.uk Note the elephant tusk, one of a pair, on the left-hand side. |

As it happens I am, although as a member of staff at Old Schools I'm allowed to use it anyway.

I’m afraid the lift is still out of use, the lift engineers are due to return to site to try and resolve the problem this morning. As the Syndicate Room is not booked today it will be opened for access to and from the Combination from 10.00. Kind regards |

A further update on the Combination Room lift. The engineers have identified the fault and a specialist part has been ordered. Until that arrives the lift will not stop at level 1 but can be used safely between the ground floor and level 2 – the dais in the Combination Room. It seems sensible to offer this limited access rather than close the room completely. Assuming the part is delivered as scheduled we hope the lift will be up and running fully later this week. Thank you for your patience while we resolve this issue. Kind regards |

It does seem sensible to wait for the specialist part rather than fashion something out of a coat hanger

I'm intrigued what part means a lift can stop at one floor and not another. I'm assuming a door isn't a specialist part.

You'd be more intrigued if you'd seen the setup. The level 2 dais is only a metre higher than level 1, but the lift door faces 90 degrees right.

I'll have to introduce you to Chelmsford nick, which has three ground floors, all on top of each other.
