Word Clouds

11:36am, 30 Jan 2017
One thing I've seen on some websites that I really like, is the option to select the things that interest you. For example, when you sign up to Apple Music, you can pick "90s", "Country and Western", "Rock" - whatever - and then the suggestions that the site puts forward are tailored to your preferences. Obviously, the giant websites do this to extremes - but I'm just hoping for a vague direction to keep in tune with what the Fetch audience wants.

I would like to do something like this for new users (and, in fact, the rest of you). I think it'd be helpful for me to plan the sort of articles I put together, and when I do talk to advertisers, I can give them a slightly more detailed picture of the things that Fetchies are interested in.

I know the kind of things that I personally want out of a running website - but for all I know, all the new people registering on Fetch could be looking for C25k programmes, or advice on shin splints, or inaugural parkruns, or ultra running, or... so many things. So if I offer a simple way for all of you to highlight your interests, I can build up a picture.

Here's the sort of list I'm thinking of:

Beginners
5k
10k
Half
Marathon
Ultra
Footwear
Kit
Biking
Swimming
Off-road
Fell running
Social
Injury advice
Training advice
Analysis
Motivation
Logging
Fundraising
London
Events
Personal Bests
Fitness
GPS
Triathlon
Cross-Training
Strengthening
Weights
Flexibility

Just as a little experiment, could you leave a comment with your three most pertinent words from that list? And if you'd like to add any words that you think should be on the list, go for it. Undoubtedly I've missed some - or there might be some words that are best off divided into two separate options. Thanks :-)

  • Off-road and social from that list. I'd also say parkrun (which sounds less scary than 5k) and perhaps I'd add nutrition too (by which obviously I mean cake and choc) ;-)

  • If I was coming on to Fetch at the point at which I'd taken up running, I'd have gone for Marathon, Training advice, and Fitness.

(It pains me to say so, but put weight loss and nutrition in as options and you'll draw people in from the starting-to-run-to-lose-weight demographic, some of whom will continue to run and may turn out to be excellent runners and future stalwarts of the site.)

  • Wouldn't you be better to just use some of the code / insight you've already got? Like the threads have got word cloud already (the keywords) and related threads associates words, doesn't it?

I've got a problem with the above, because some of its about running / racing like the distances, some about information e.g. advice; some about kit e.g. GPS. So I am interested in advice about using GPS for marathon - 3 words right there! But that's just one topic.

Anyhoo, I will try to answer as requested:
    Training advice; Analysis; Social

But big caveat - Training advice covers for me: Fitness, Cross-Training, Strengthening, Weights, Flexibility. And Analysis covers: Logging, 5k, 10k, Half, Marathon, Ultra, Personal Bests etc.!

I think you'd need to categorise the questions:
Ability: beginner, intermediate, advanced intermediate, county, national or international elite
Club: club, no club, informal club/group
Sport: running, biking, swimming, triathlon, general fitness
    Time

Experience: less than 1 year, 1-3 years, 4-10 year, 10 years plus
Record keeping: log stuff on a website; log and analyse; log and excel the sh*t out of everything to the nth degree
    etc.

As an absolute noob, I'm jogging on private land away from the beaten track. No interest in a 5k, or anything, just trying to get a bit fitter. Training advice for me would be very different to someone looking to improve their marathon times. I suppose by our recorded training we are categorised as noob/pretty-serious/half-decent/legendary, maybe we could have (optional) categories to plonk ourselves in.

Many years ago when I found this site it was from searching for logging my runs so my top three as a newbie would be Logging, Training Advice, not on the list but probably Weight Loss. Buckets Ready

12:31pm, 29 Jan 2017
No, not for donations - but thank you to those who have made them and/or promised them.

The buckets are in case you want to be sick, because I'm about to be soppy.

A hard #fexit is a challenging thing - but it's also been a blessing. It's been a reminder of just how many wonderful people there are - I've had messages of support and encouragement, as well as practical help and hugs and scotch eggs from so many different sources. I often reminisce about my first ever 10k, and how it felt like an electric current going through me when I ran into the Millenium Stadium towards the finish line. Well, that's how it's felt every day for the past few weeks, thanks to you lot.

At the heart of it all has been my lovely wife, Katie. As well as making plans to get the site to the point where it can generate enough to give me an income, we've also been considering the things that are important in our own lives, and thinking about the things we can do without. It's been a wonderful affirmation that we are best friends, and in that, we have what we need most.

Thanks Everyone :-)

I wish I'd found Fetch Everyone years ago, and from my negative experience on the other site I truly value and appreciate the lengths you are going to to keep this site independent and true to its roots; despite being a newbie I'm happy to contribute to keep this site in safe hands. New Home Page

5:23pm, 23 Jan 2017
I've just released an update to the home page.

I guess that most of you who use the site regularly may not spend a lot of time there - but for over a quarter of new users, it's their first opportunity to see what the site has to offer. And whilst a nice big cinematic picture (route of the day) is undoubtedly big and definitely cinematic, I think it's also useful to give new users the opportunity to see the breadth of features available on the site. So I've made the decision to give that a bit less room - and introduce some boxes that can show off different parts of the site. (For you ROTD fans, there is a little bit of good news. If you click the image to view the route, you get to see the picture full size). Over the coming weeks, I'll be concentrating on keeping those boxes busy with lots of interesting stuff from around the site - because in 13 years of coding, there are corridors even I've not been down for quite some time :-)

The other thing that's encouraged this move is the obvious change in circumstances. From here on, the website becomes my sole source of income, and so I do have to think about its commercial attractiveness. The home page has around 75,000 unique views per month - which makes it one of the best places on the site to offer opportunities for product placement. In practice, what this means is that a few of those boxes will be given over to reviews, race ads, charity places, competitions, and other paid-for content - but all significantly more relevant to you as an audience than speculative Russian brides, or whatever website you visited just before Fetch. My rates are excellent, by the way - let me know if you'd like to talk busy-ness :-)

It's always a bit of a *thing* when I change something that you might have become very accustomed to - but I do hope you like the new look, and can see the reasons for doing so. As always, leave a comment and let me know what you think. There's also a poll you can do here: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/polls-view.php?id=5695

  • I rarely go to the home page, but it looks a bit busy, and the left and right hand side boxes don't line up on my iPod because of the borders and colours (might be ok on a computer).

Maybe you need some non-fetchies to test different versions to see what people prefer and what will make them stick around? The race finder is actually an amazing feature of fetch, so perhaps put it a bit higher? Newbies might not know what fetchpoint is? I think maybe you need to streamline the page for new visitors to make it look a bit more coherent, and give the real USP of fetch. But there's not much point asking us cos we are not your target market...

  • I like it - and it's also prompted me to try out the kit bag - but I'd like to be able to add in the miles done to date as a one-off entry for my shoes, and the date I got them, rather than a default of not used before and just purchased (then I'd rely on strava less and Fetch more). One for the list of things to add maybe? Or can I already do this and I'm being a thicko?

  • When is the footer (Fetcheveryone is a publication of Hearst Magazines...
    Diogenes
    7:34pm, 23rd Jan 2017
  • etc) going to change?
    Diogenes
    7:34pm, 23rd Jan 2017
  • One other observation is that there's not actually a picture of anyone running on the homepage.
    Diogenes
    7:41pm, 23rd Jan 2017
  • I'd echo Diogenes, no runners in the pictures. That could be fixed by a picture of someone racing in the race finder rather than just a red box?

  • I quite llike the update.

BUT the square blocks are, for want of a better term, a bit harsh ~ a bit of a border and rounded corners? (might give them the look of a 'pressable button'???).

Also, the link to the article about trainer life. Perhaps make it so the front page link is to the kit bag and use it as a central hub to link to kit/gear articles from there?

And as SimonClarke mentions, being able to add `historic use' to kit and gear would be useful.

  • Initial thoughts were that I didn't like the homepage - but (1) I see the reason to change it, and (2) I'm pretty sure that's mostly just an aversion to change.

One thing that jumped out - or rather, didn't jump out. Member of the month, sponsored by... Well, I couldn't read it, even though I know what it says. Might be good to put the sponsor logo on there somewhere.

  • I do go via homepage quite a bit and on a phone I like the change.
    SPR
    8:33pm, 23rd Jan 2017
  • Much prefer the new one, the old one had lots of cliquey things on it that even a longtime user like myself wouldn't go in to.

you re right the homepage is the landing site, so 'selling' it well means more users and a better community. I think given this is all runners with GPS, making the most of the data you have is good way to win them over. The trainers analysis is a great example, but even better if you can link in some of the 'how uch training do people do for X' pieces.

    Good luck!

  • Looking at it on my laptop, the boxes look much nicer! I originally came to fetch because I googled 'website for logging running miles' or something and I imagine that's probably fairly typical, so making that prominent with some ideas for other stuff you can also do on here is probably worthwhile :)

  • I thought I'd gone to the wrong site, or been logged out, when I first saw the new home page, but I'd forgotten within a few minutes. It would be nice if there was a box link to the forum; it's something that I've often looked for quickly on other sites (non-running).
Like mentioned above, I think that some of the boxes could be more appealling with different images, eg the race finder.
Talking of which, I met up with an old friend a few weeks ago who was complaining bitterly that there was "nowhere" on the internet where he could go to and search for races. Ahem, allow me to introduce you....

  • There is one row fewer in the Blog Highlights than in the Recent Posts column, which looks slightly uneven. I think it would benefit from an arresting running picture, either at the top, on one side, or as a background. And perhaps the box text should be beneath the box image so it is more distinct. But these are all minor things, overall it is excellent and much better than the competition.

  • Understand the approach and concept and think it's a big improvement. Never a fan of the route. However the blunt squares boxes feel like I've gone back 10 years.

Also need on the phone, esp in landscape view, there's huge swathes of white space below the boxes and the lists, and between the two lists.

Finally (!) I'd consider losing 'what we saw today' as it takes up a lot of space and isn't particularly in line with what you're trying to achieve.

  • You need to find a specialised, small business accountant, one that understands IT contracting. They will set up the company and do all your returns. All you need to do is keep semi-decent records. A spreadsheet is fine for this, you don't need an accounts package. Happy to share mine if it helps; it's worked for me for the last 10 years.
