Training Log - Sneak Peek

4:25pm, 27 Sep 2016
Here's a screenshot of the prototype of the new training log:

Notes:

1) The sticky* tabbed view of entries (list view), calendar view, graphs, map (shown) and summary.
2) The new twelve month navigator (with a sticky* option to switch back to 'classic') showing a rolling twelve month total.
3) Date chooser and filters top left.
4) Cleaned up Import/Manual buttons top right.

What do you think of that?

*sticky = the system remembers your choice for next time.

EDIT: MORE STUFF

5) The calendar view will now show the weekly totals for full weeks, even if the start of the week is before the start of the period you've selected. Surprisingly, this has been the most-voted-for suggestion in the consultation: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/consultation.php
6) The 'All Training' filter... it used to be that if you had chosen, say, 'Long Runs', you'd have to go back up to 'All Runs' before choosing a different type, and all the way back to 'All Training' if you wanted to look at your swims/bikes etc. But the drop-down will now have the full tree of options available for you.
7) The 'Entries' (formerly 'List') View should now be sorting your training entries in the correct order, based on date, hour, and then on order of uploading.
8) The summary now also includes beats/mile stats, as well as total ascent.

Fetch Shop Sale! Old stuff clearout!

1:06pm, 26 Sep 2016
[cut and paste from the thread I just created, sorry about that]

In an effort to regain some of cupboard space, I've quite literally reduced the prices on a bunch of the old stock that I've got lying around. Scroll down past all the pre-order new stuff, and you should find some reductions that get your shopping muscles all twitchy. As you can see, they are a mixture of sizes, but the recent update to the shop at least means you can see quickly what is available:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/store.php

Also appearing for the first time, the remainder of last year's black subscriber shirts, as modelled by my best bud and most awesomest wife, KatieB.

The shop works on credits - there's a 'Buy Now' button if you need more credits, or you can also get them by taking out a voluntary subscription.

The consultation system...

12:07pm, 16 Sep 2016
I like the way it's working so far :-)

As per my previous blog, I've made some updates that mean we can capture more time zone info from the incoming files. This has helped some users, but not all.

I've also built some extra code today that means I can fmail all the people who've voted for a particular proposal, to give them an update. In this example, it means that some folks will be able to move their vote to a different proposal, and those that still have an issue can keep it in place. Since sending an update, the timezone proposal has already dropped by five votes. Democracy in action :-)

For now, I'd like to keep the proposals centred around the training log, but in principle, I think this approach would work really well for any aspect of the site. I was surprised that no-one picked up on my suggestion to allow subscribers more votes. I thought I'd get lynched for that :-)

  • Maybe you could hide the extra weighting you give the opinions of your subscribers. That way you know which way they think but it won't necessarily show in the public results. You could then decide in your role as Lord Fetch of Fetch whether to pay extra attention to their opinions or not. They may not have different priorities do the other site users. It might be interesting to see what if any difference such a weighting would make.

  • I've realised I have a new wish for the training log - in fact, it is such an old wish I'd forgotten all about it. It comes in two versions of which the second would be preferred one:
    a) restore the line after the splits times that used to say "You stopped your watch for 250 seconds" (and show it in hours and minutes)
    b) have two separate views of training, one including the non-moving times and one excluding them.

Garmin support for timezone info

10:49am, 15 Sep 2016
As far as I can make out through reverse engineering, the FIT files that we receive from Garmin *sometimes* contain information on time zone, and sometimes don't. As a rule, the newer and more expensive ones tend to record more bits of information than the older and cheaper ones. Not that there's anything wrong with old and cheap, so long as it does what you want it to do.

This morning, I've been tracking the watch model numbers on each of the FIT files that have arrived from Garmin, and have the following list of supported models:

910XT
920XT
10
620
Vivoactive HR

and the following models that don't seem to support it:

310XT
110
610
Edge 500

I'll add to this list as I find out more.

Easy to get wrong but with the support built into languages like Java there is no excuse really nowadays for not getting it right. Not saying I'm a huge fan of Java - I mean, imagine a Garmin coded in Java, it would take ages to redraw map screens and periodically freeze for no apparent reason to do GC. Oh.

For example, I ran at 7am this morning (in GMT+12hrs), if I log it now either I put it in the current fetch day (i.e. my yesterday, your today) and move it later or leave it on the wrong day for ever; or I put it in my today (i.e. your tomorrow) and it goes to my training plan until me and GMT are on the same day at which point I can move it to my training log. Or I wait until lunchtime to log it, and hope I dont reset my stopwatch before then.

The GMT/BST/Timezone problem

5:27pm, 14 Sep 2016
A quick update.

If your data arrives on Fetch in a FIT file, we have a very good chance of picking the timezone out of it. I've put a fix in place now that will look through the FIT file for time zone info, and it seems to be picking up the GMT/BST thing, and has correctly identified the time zone for a few overseas files already.

About 95% of the files that come direct from Garmin are in this format, so I'm calling that a win. The other 5% are in TCX format, with a tiny amount of GPX files. If you're in that 5%, then there's not a lot I can do - there doesn't seem to be any time zone info in the file.

My TomTom can spit out FIT files, but they don't appear to include time zone info just yet. However, I've emailed the lovely folks in their dev team, and hope for something positive to come out of that.

If you're in another category, let me know, and I can look at that soon. Or if you've created any training entries since about 5pm, leave me a comment and let me know if the 'hour' data was correct.

Ta.

  • I auto uploaded a run from garmin connect tonight. I started the run at about 6.30pm and for the first time since BST started it showed the correct time (6pm). Due to another issue (it cut short my route trace - see my moan on the fetch point thread!), I downloaded a TCX file from GC then uploaded it manually to here. That showed a time of 5pm for the run :-) (no biggie, I'm used to updating it!)

    3:05am, 15th Sep 2016
  • Carpathius - I've had a look at the file that came over, and it doesn't seem to have the same time zone info in it that other watches have. Other (I guess more recent) Garmins have a field called activity.local_timestamp - which for UK users is currently 3600 seconds ahead of another field called activity.timestamp. Similarly, overseas users have a larger difference between the two fields. It's possibly something that the 310XT would support with a software update maybe? I'll see if I can log some stats today, to see if I can track the model / software versions, and which ones have this timezone info.

I notice that the time of my activities are recorded as UTC anyway though, cancel that, just checked and this mornings show local time. Training Log Consultation...

1:22pm, 14 Sep 2016
...seems to be going pretty well - there have been lots of proposals, and quite a bit of voting activity.

Here it is:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/consultation.php

Have you voted yet?

It's looking like my first step will be to look at the whole rat's nest that is the GMT/BST/timezone issue. It's gonna be fun (not) because every type of file, and every type of watch tends to do things slightly differently. But heck, at least it's not Brexit :-)

If this works well, in theory I could open it up for other areas of the site. I could remove the bit where I veto the proposals before they go live, so that you could all take responsibility for voting up the sane ones, voting down the insane, and catching duplicates. Contentious idea: subscribers could get more votes :-O #cashforquestions

In other news, we swam this morning. It's weird going back to chlorinated water after the fresher tasting lake. I tried wearing a HRM, to see what my swimming HR is like - but every time I pushed off the wall, the water yanked it out of place. I abandoned it after two lengths, and will have to try again with my tri suit on.

One of the good things that lake swimming has done is to get me past the 1km mental barrier (if the alternative is coming to a halt in the middle of a lake, it keeps you motivated). Time ran out in the pool today, but I feel like I've got to the point where I can keep going - even if it's at a bit of a chug. So the idea of a 1.2 mile swim for a half ironman doesn't feel at all out of the question, and then I'm half way towards my five year plan ;-)

But let's not get carried away. On Sunday, we ran 13 miles in the morning, and then did the lake swim (0.9 miles) at 5pm. So I had a 7 hour transition, with some coffee and scrambled eggs between run and swim. And when I get out of the water, my legs have gone completely mentalist, and the ice cream head is non-trivial. The idea of me getting straight onto a bike would be pretty funny, if you weren't me. And 56 miles is a long way on a bike.

And let's not be downhearted either. Pretty much a year ago today, I wasn't doing bilateral breathing, and because of that, I was taking breaks every so often to let my lungs catch up. My average mile pace in 2015 was 47:49 in 12 miles of swimming, and this year in the pool, it's been 43:27 over 17.4 miles; and has been more like 42:32 over the last few months. So I'm having a 'raaaar' for that.

I looked at some Half Ironperson results (Exmoor), and the leading swim times are quite astonishing. The fastest swimmer did 24:48 for 1.2 miles - I'd be about half way by that point. There were 1048 swim times in that race, so if I could match my recent pool swimming pace, I'd be something like 840th [CORRECTION: more like 1014th!!!] getting out of the water. Assuming I can swim in a straight line is dangerous - ask Nightjar for a very amusing video of me swimming at 90 degrees to my intended direction. But 840th [OR 1014th] is ok. 66 swimmers didn't register a time for the run, for whatever reason... and if I could trot out a half marathon to within ten minutes of my PB, the run part would be in the top half of the field.

But 56 miles is STILL a long way on a bike.

Training Log - Consultation

4:06pm, 12 Sep 2016
That's a fancy title, isn't it? :-)

There are a bunch of things I'd like to do to the training log, to improve it. I've collected these over time - either through my own experience, or through feedback from users. Random things, like:

Fix the GMT/BST bug that means your runs show up an hour before/after the relevant time
Automated import from Suunto
Have some more relevant fields, and sane graph options for swimming.
Fix the misreported cadence that users of some watches see.
Build a better monthly summary page.
Make the elevation data work better on extremely long runs.
Fix the x-axis on the graphs on the glasses view, so that the numbers don't bunch together.

That sort of thing.

There are any number of little changes that can be made. And because the training log is (I feel) such an important part of the site, I want to get your involvement in guiding my coding fingers towards the most appropriate changes and improvements - and away from stuff that might be a flight of fancy.

So.

Here's where my fancy 'Consultation' comes in. I'd like to hear your suggestions for improvements - and those that don't sound absolutely bat-sh*t crazy will get added as proposals, that you can then vote for. If it works, I could even extend this to the rest of the site. But let's not get carried away :-)

Let's focus on the training log first. To my mind, that's pretty much everything that you see inside the 'Train' menu, and not much that's outside it. I've built a little prototype voting system this afternoon, so that you can make suggestions, which I can veto before they turn into proposals. When they turn into proposals, you can then distribute five votes amongst the options - and we can all see which way the wind is blowing.

Give it a go:

Thanks :-)

  • you may have guessed this was coming... Fix it so that the log can accept large run files from the Fenix 3HR. Small runs are fine, but when you get into ultra territory they fail to upload, either on transfer from Garmin Connect or by trying to upload any of various file types. Not sure if its a pure size thing, or if there is an element of the extra running dynamics info. I can let you have sample files :)

Fetch Social Runs

10:35am, 12 Sep 2016
We've been talking about the idea of picking a different venue each month for an informal Sunday morning run, followed by a meal at a nearby pub / cafe / dumpster. In my head, I imagine a group of about 10-20 of us, at somewhere like Draycote Water, trotting out a few laps of the reservoir, before retiring to the Dun Cow in Dunchurch for a slap-up gravy dinner and a crate of brown ale.

By picking a different venue each time, we can visit some interesting places, stay one step ahead of the authorities, and hopefully meet up with as many Fetchies as possible. And if the venue is somewhere that allows us to do fairly large laps, then those who want to do a longer run can go round a few more times.

If that sounds like a good idea, please join this group for updates:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/groups-view.php?id=1239

We've pencilled in Draycote Water on 23rd October - but do join the group even if you're unable to make it, or live in a different part of the country - if it's fun, we'll pick somewhere else for the following month. Oh, and in case it's not clear, it'd be a free thing - although that also means "at your own risk", "buy your own gravy dinner", and if a hundred people sign up, we'd need a rethink :-)

Join the group if you're interested in hearing more!

Subscriber shirts, vests and hoodies, and determination.

1:54pm, 9 Sep 2016
I've updated the subscription system so that when you subscribe, you get some credits to spend in the Fetch shop. If you go for a monthly subscription, you'll get a small amount that build up each month. If you pay annually, you'll get 5, 15 or 25 credits, depending on which option you go for.

25 is enough to get you a new-design shirt or vest. Here's the shirt (artist's impression):

and here's the vest:

But I know that many of you have been asking about hoodies - so there are also some hoodie options there. You can go with a red one, or a 'storm grey' one. The latter looks like this (but will have a big Fetch logo across the front):

The hoodies are 35 credits (so if you wanted to buy one straight off, you'd need to get hold of 35 credits, which would cost £35 - there's a 'Buy Now' button for credits on the shop).

All being well, I should be putting the shirt and hoodie orders in during September, and sending the goodies out in October. Here's the link to the shop:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/store.php

and here's the subscriber link:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/subscribe.php

Any problems, let me know. Ta. And also thank you. And muchos gracias. And 'thanks butt'. That's what we say in Wales. It doesn't mean that I'm comparing you to a backside, it's short for "thanks butty". Look it up on Urban Dictionary. Fourth one down.

Speaking of Wales (in my best Alex Jones voice), here's a picture of my sister:

She came to mind when I read Claireruns' blog. My sister did her first parkrun in May, in over 45 minutes. I ran it with her last weekend, and she's well under 37 mins now. She told me about how she was in Cardiff last October when the half marathon was on, and wondering just who was capable of running a half marathon. And now she knows that everyone can, and she's going to prove it next month. Take control Fetchies. Hum the theme tune to Wonder Woman. Imagine punching hecklers in the neck, whilst smiling sweetly. You've got this.

Fetch Voluntary Subscriptions

3:57pm, 6 Sep 2016
The first wave of voluntary annual subscriptions is due to come to an end tomorrow.

I was thinking that from here on, there could be an option to donate a smaller amount each month, rather than one annual payment.

In my head, I was thinking three levels - something like £4.99 per month, £2.99 per month, and £1.99 per month - and to make them "rolling" rather than a one off - with the option of cancelling them at any point, no questions asked.

The slightly tricky thing is how to do accompanying "goodies". I got the idea that the pin badges and car stickers were "ok", but not fabulous. Am I right? But if someone is willing to fork out some cash each month, then I think it's only right to do something, somehow. So I reckon that if folks were to go for the £4.99 option, they should definitely get a free shirt. Sure, there might be someone out there who starts a subscription, claims the free shirt and then cancels it... but given the overwhelming support you all gave me over the subscriptions last time, let's go with the "everyone is awesome" option :-)

What do you reckon? I'll stick this in a blog too.

  • I guess the monthly subscription would be helpful for those who feel they might not want to support/visit this site for ever (or even just for a whole year longer), especially if there was an option just to opt out and in - for example someone who uses the site purely for training then gets injured can't run for 3 or 4 months so doesn't use the site, but wants to come back when recovered. As to the goodies... could you negotiate a deal with a company to give a discount/freebie using a unique Fetch subscriber code - e.g. when they buy a pair of running shoes they get a free pair of socks, or get £25 off second pair, depending on the level of supporter - I appreciate they have to buy something else to get the 'reward' but I suspect there are a lot of people who are happy to support the site regardless of any further 'inducements'.
Perhaps you could also have an option for an occasional donation... a 'regular subscribe' button or a 'buy me a beer' button

  • I'd prefer to pay once a year, but I'm really not fussed about getting anything in return except the site.
    Stepford Wife
    6:50pm, 6th Sep 2016
  • I'm happy with monthly or annual. Goodies? It's the thought that counts - the gesture. I'd be very happy to pay without goodies; I don't go into a shop to buy something and expect a bag of random stuff for free.
    Winded
    7:25pm, 6th Sep 2016
  • Don't get me wrong because I lurve love this website but £5 a month = £60 a year 😳😳🤔😳, that's quite a lot for a free website
    minardi

    9:23pm, 6th Sep 2016
  • Crikey, the years just flee past, don't they?! :-)

I'd like to pay annually. I don't need any more Fetch tech gear (3 t-shirts and 3 vests, so far) unless you're going to sort out some more cycling tops (hint, hint). I could go a 'normal' cotton t-shirt or, as others have said, I'd make a lot of use of a mug or a bidon bottle.

Will you be contacting us when we're actually due?
    Angus Clydesdale
    9:26pm, 6th Sep 2016
  • As Linds said, please don't faff about with the .99 business. Personally I'd go for annual but monthly is fine if that suits the business better. A cap/buff/arm-warmers/socks (choice of) would be lovely but not really necessary. Are you going to re-visit the notion of Fetch being a free website? It wouldn't be unreasonable to make it fully a subscription site, IMO.
    LazyDaisy
    10:10pm, 6th Sep 2016
  • Please don't just trust people :) Most people here are lovely, but all it needs is one bad 'un to promote playing the system to get free/super-cheap stuff and you're running at a loss.

Maybe if people were to go for the pay monthly option, they could (if they wish) build up credits towards a 'free' gift (get a credit each month they pay in, once they get 12 they qualify for a mug/t-shirt/hand-stitched owl with FehootchEveryone on it's crest...

  • I don't mind, I'll pay either way :-)

Could you have an opt out tick-box for the goodies - I don't really want a pin or car sticker, but some of the other suggestions (eg cap or shorts, discount in the shop) sound great.
    TeeBee
    7:28am, 7th Sep 2016
  • Happy to pay for this lovely place, don't really have a preference for monthly or annual, don't mind at all about getting anything extra, but can I just say how much I loved the last top? The red side panels made it really flattering and it's one of only a few I'm happy wearing
    HellsBells

  • I like JK's idea about building up credits for the goodies on the monthly subs so people can't cheat the system...
    BaronessBL

  • Annual, prefer 'gift' to discount, donation to include FERC membership?
    Fenland Flier
    10:16am, 7th Sep 2016
  • I like the idea of a Fetch cap too.
A practical way of avoiding potential abuse (i.e. signing up to get a shirt but cancelling a couple of months in) is to have a points system - 1 pt p/m for the £1.99 option, 2 pts for the £2.99 option etc. You could allow users to build up credits to spend on a range of gifts or in the Fetch shop? It is more labour intensive for you and you may need to create a wider range of goodies. Credit could also be used toward FERC renewals too. Food for thought.

  • love the idea of a regular 4.99 - which is very little really and I could do with another piece of clothing as at the moment and since *they* stopped giving away t-shirts after races and started giving you Tec T's - I have nothing to wear (did buy a new star wars t shirt the other day)

    8:33am, 8th Sep 2016
  • Please stick with real money numbers (£2, £3 and £5 say), and agree with the idea of building up 'credits' for a subscriber store. After 10 or 12 months a T shirt or vest should be the right level for a £5 a month donation. It does mean though that the other levels also eventually get a reward.

This also means people can pick their reward e.g. after 4 months a mug, or after 15 a long sleeve top (assuming £5 a month). This seems the best solution to people who don't want anything, but also to those that do, but differ on what it would be nice to have!
