Pi Club

10:45am, 25 Feb 2016
Following on from yesterday's blog, I've started a thread for Raspberry Pi fans:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/viewtopic.php?id=58721

But in case you were wondering, I haven't just been spending my time playing with my Raspberry Pi :-)

Yesterday I did some work on the race guide - because I was feeling a bit embarrassed by the way it would spit out dozens of parkruns, and mask all the other useful stuff. There were options that would exclude parkruns from the list - but they were all a bit clunky. Therefore the best thing was to rip it up and start again. So I've:

Given it a lick of paint.
Made the buttons to search and add races a bit clearer.
Simplified the settings - you just control maximum travel now.
Given people a simpler way to opt out of it, without opting out of all other communications.
Made it so that you can see an online equivalent (some email clients are text only, which really mangles it)
Fixed it so that cycling, triathlons and duathlons show up in different colours.
Pulled out all the parkruns, and listed them at the bottom of the guide.

If you want to see what it looks like, here's an example:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/raceguide.php?latitude=52.1349&longitude=-0.446787&maxtravel=50

Today, amongst other things, I've got to:

1) test that it's all working ok (although the next one doesn't go out until March 20th)
2) start moving some routes data on the server, because it's stored in an unwieldy way
3) continue my chat with a developer at strava about using their API to get data onto Fetch for strava users.

In other news, it's parents evening tonight, and if we bribe the teacher, we might also find out if The Boy has got the part of Robin Hood in the school play :-) He's also switched from defender to goalie, for his footie team. They lost 7-0 on Saturday, but he really enjoyed it.

In running news, I got through my 12 ok on Tuesday. I've got a 6M tempo run to do tomorrow morning (eep). Then next week I'd like to do maybe a 13/14, and either another tempo run (7:30/mile), or back it off to race pace (7:55?) to see how comfortable/uncomfortable it is. The half marathon is in 2.5 weeks.

Current temperature is a sweltering 22.5°C, but there are two of us plus two dogs in a small room :-)

Pi Project Update

10:31am, 24 Feb 2016
Yesterday a parcel arrived for me, covered in Chinese writing - all the way from the gloriously titled 'Fuming Industrial Park', in Shenzhen. It was a breadboard - not the kind you cut bread on, but the electronics kind.

WARNING! GEEKERY!

I have a little home project going on. This is the controller for my heating:

As you might be able to see, it has two on-off time segments, but that's about all it does. There's no adjustable thermostat, so you either have to have it on, or have it off (matron). This is not so bad when we're around, but when we're not, it's a pain. It needs to be on occasionally, just to make sure the pipes don't freeze.

I could pay for a jazzy new thermostat, or one of those Hive things - but I've decided to make my own :-)

Here's the Pi, with all the cables that you need to get started. Clockwise from the yellow one, they are: ethernet connection (internet, in other words), HDMI output (to the telly), power cable (a micro USB / Samsung phone charger), links to the breadboard (the little thin jumper cables), mouse (USB), keyboard (USB):

It's a bit unwieldy having all those cables - the Pi is so light they tend to pull it about a lot. So the first task was to get a wireless internet connection (that's the little thing that you can just about see above the keyboard USB, with the word Daffodil on it), and to enable SSH on the Pi. Then you can dispense with everything but the power cable, and your project breadboard, and can connect to your Pi from your usual laptop or desktop computer. So then you're left with this:

The circuit in the breadboard is dead simple - I just copied it from an internet tutorial - it's just one temperature sensor (that's the little circular black thing on the breadboard), and one resistor (the little blue thing), and a bunch of jumper cables.

Once you've got all that set up and plugged in (that was a bit nerve-wracking, due to memories of frying my ZX Spectrum back in the late 80s), the Pi just needs a few extra libraries loaded in, and then the sensor will spit temperature readings into a directory.

The Pi also comes with everything you need to run Python scripts, so I copied and cobbled together a little script that grabs those readings from the sensor, and writes them to a file of my own, with some timestamp info - and then set up cron to run that script once a minute. And so that I can monitor it from anywhere, I've also asked it to use a POST request to send the data to Fetch, which is very kindly storing the values, and will display the most recent ones here:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/pi-temp.php

(Leave me a comment, and I'll go and stick my thumb on the sensor for you, lol)

So now I can monitor the temperature, but I can't do anything about it when it gets too cold or too warm. That's the next step. There's room on the Pi for more cables, so my plan is to cannibalise a remote control power socket (like these: amazon.co.uk ), and get the Pi to issue commands to turn that off or on. But that's for next time. For now I'm just enjoying looking at the numbers :-)

Spends so far
=========
Raspberry Pi: £25.99
Memory card: £8.29
Wireless USB plugin: £5.50
Breadboard: £1.98
Temperature sensor: £2.10
A big bag of jumper cables: £5.59
Cables, Mouse and Keyboard: borrowed from old stuff we had lying around
=========
TOTAL = £49.45

  • your house is too hot, now wonder the planet is a polluted wreck, wear a jumper. hmmm, you'd need to be very careful where you place that thermometer, also those cables, any heat? Dd you know what an heuristic feedback loop is? hmm You need some sort of gap, between the temperature you want the heating to go on/off at, a sort of lag, so that the heating doesn't bump the temperature up and down, so your heating comes onand off every few seconds.

  • I don't want to get into a nerd off, but if you used a mercury thermometer, with the electric into the mercury and the other contact at the desired temperature on the scale then, well that would be even easier, apart from the handling of mercury and the lack of adjustability, but apart from that.....

Because I'd like to check the blogging badges are working...

2:08pm, 5 Feb 2016
here's a short blog from me :-)

My throat/cough/chest combo is improving, but my sinuses were a bit sore earlier, so I decided to give running a miss. This means that I won't get another chance until Monday now, as I'm with the boy - but I don't mind that - it was planned that way anyway.

Right then - let's see if I've unlocked anything!

Crapruary

7:31pm, 3 Feb 2016
January was undoubtedly a very successful running month. I got my long run up to 12 miles, and my tempo run up to six miles. So it's entirely fitting that I've started February by having a sore throat bordering on a chest infection. I hope it clears up soon. Luckily I managed to fit a 9 miler in yesterday, as I edged towards unwellness.

On the up-side, I'm now officially the Event Director for Bedford parkrun, which means I get a lift to the run every week from the mayor. Oh no wait, I don't. But I did get to give the newbies briefing. I cringe and want to curl up somewhere dark every time I think about speaking to groups of people in public.

I also got to meet up with some folks from the council sports department, 'cos they're keen on getting sport into some of the less well-off parts of Bedford, and another parkrun is something they've been thinking about. Katie and I went for a run around the park that they're looking at, and we think it might be more suited to a junior event, because it's not especially big. Anyone have any experience of the current parkrun HQ stance on smaller parks? This one is a smidge over a mile, going round the outer loop.

I read an interesting interview the other day with a bloke who was saying that 'social' media is a falsehood, particularly when we block out the difficult bits. If all we are left with is the people who we agree with, then it becomes nothing more than something that massages our own opinions. It makes me think about the unsocialised dog that we saw on our walk the other day - it was lashing out at the world, because it had no concept that the world can bite back.

I have bought myself a Raspberry Pi - largely because the fun of Code Club has rubbed off on me - but also because I have a plan. I've got a really crappy thermostat - you can program it to go off and on at different times of the day, but it doesn't have any concept of how hot it is - so it's a pain in the pipes. And when I'm not around, it either has to be completely off, or on twice a day - not necessarily ever corresponding to when it's needed. Here it is, in all its thrilling glory:

My plan is to build my own cut-price Hive system - the fancy one off the telly costs at least £200. The Pi cost £25, and so I plan on buying a temperature sensor (about £2), and something that will allow the Pi to send a signal to the thermostat to turn it off and on (that fuse plate will swap out for a remote-control socket - about £5 - and I can get the Pi to trigger that). All I then have to do is get the Pi to monitor the temperature in the house, and then send ON or OFF to the thermostat whenever it reaches a threshold. I can leave it to its own devices, or set up a little web server on it, so I can control it from wherever I am. It'll be my idea of fun, if nothing else.

  • But they're not like ordinary people, they're runners! Happy smiley runners. No idea about parkrun HQ's take on small parks. Ours is a three-lap course and none the worse for that.
    sallykate
    7:36pm, 3rd Feb 2016
  • We have a Nest, well worth the money, and the 2nd generation is on Amazon now for £140...

The only thing it doesn't do, which would be handy, is having multiple sensors. So make sure the bedroom is warm at night (who cares about the rest of the house), the kitchen warm for when we get home and have tea, then the living room warm in the evening. With a nest the only way to do that is to buy one for each location.

Anyway I would say either get a Nest, or embrace the self build reality (there will be existing code to adapt out there somewhere), and go all in to have multiple sensors.

Regarding parkruns, please don't do it in a one mile loop. My local is a great park, and is 1 3/4 laps, yet for the last half a lap of the second, you are dodging the slower runners. With a small one you have people potentially getting lapped twice, and the bulk of the field catching the back of the field - it'll be chaos and not very fun - especially when people run in to each other.

  • Definitely going down the home-build route - cheaper, and will be so chuffed if I can get it to work :-) £15 spent on breadboard, jumper cables, a temperature sensor, and a wifi USB dongle, so I can put the Pi where I want

    :-)

BB6666 - this is even more of a thing at our existing parkrun at Bedford (2.75 laps), which is why we've tried to steer the council towards a junior event - and they seem to be on board with the thinking behind it. I'm a big fan of your local park :-)

    LindsD
    8:46pm, 3rd Feb 2016
  • There are millions of parkruns with 3 laps. And actually it's usually the poorer parts of town which have less green space and smaller pockets of green space, so from that perspective posher areas would end up with more parkruns than poorer areas. Thinking aloud with my researcher's hat on... Your Hive-a-like sounds coooooool!

  • My local parkrun, Redcar Parkrun is a 1 mile loop course. It's great. THe faster runners are able to encourage the slower runners on their second lap. Other longer distance races are held in the park going up to a 20 mile race organised by New Marske Harriers AC.. Again the atmosphere is top notch with running camaraderie oozing all over the place. Don't dismiss the idea.

  • Woodley is a three lapper and I know there were concerns amongst some runners that it would be too small a location given that it's a fairly busy park which hosts junior football on a Saturday morning but it works very well coping with 250+ runners a week at the moment (probably due to Reading having moved to a temporary location currently) and has a record attendance of over 300.

  • Dewsbury is 4 laps - hilly, bendy and hideous - but works. Cross Flatts has only 2 laps but they have very narrow paths and a flight of steps to run up each time! Actually Cross Flatts is brilliant as it is a little park in the middle of rows of terraced houses. Lots of locals come to run and others stand on their steps with mugs of tea watching the action. Last time I was there a couple of drunks on a bench waved their bottles at us and cheered too!! Really cheap caff round the corner for post run breakfast butties.

    8:37am, 4th Feb 2016
  • What we've said to the council is that it's probably a good idea to start off with a junior event - and see how that goes - they can always look at doing the full thing when they've cracked it. Bedford works absolutely fine as a 2.75 lap course. We get quite a bit of lapping, but in the main this works fine - there's just an occasional person who thinks their run is the most important. I suppose I was conscious that this might be more of an issue in a smaller park, with narrower paths - but like parkrun say, they don't mind if certain events stay small. Anyway... the council have got to raise the money first too.

    7:38pm, 4th Feb 2016
  • March parkrun is 4 laps around a small town park. It works, but the downside of multiple laps is that the grass takes a hammering, especially on corners, and I can see the Council having issues with that pretty soon.

I'm interested in your Pi project. I've considered trying to do something similar, but never got around to it yet.
    flanker
    1:00am, 5th Feb 2016
  • On parkrun laps, I reckon (from the POV of keeping count of laps, and no-one 'accidentally' finishing a lap early) there's a very strong justification for 3 laps being OK and manageable, but 4 and above becoming risky.
    paul the builder
    9:37am, 5th Feb 2016
  • hove parkrun is also just over the mile on the outer loop, and Haywards Heath (Claire Park) parkrun is 4 laps and very hilly, so it can be done if everyone is mindful of overtaking.
Want to get into RPi, just don't have the time, good luck the project !

  • I have a RPi. Using some bits and pieces, a camera module, a 32gb usb stick and a rechargable power pack, I made a wearable camera to take photo a every second during a marathon I ran last year. Camera on my head, RPi and battery on a belt at the base of my back, got 16,000 photos that turned into an 18 minute timelapse video.
