Book club and Harriers

10:40pm, 28 Aug 2014
It turns out we now have a book group here on Fetch :-)

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/viewtopic.php?id=56655

One day I will have visited all the rooms :-)

I also went for my first ever run with Bedford Harriers last night - it was good fun - six miles on a muddy route we'd never run before. I have an application form :-)

A treasure trove for bookish types

4:11pm, 27 Aug 2014
When I was in Wales with my parents, my mam told me about this big warehouse in Carmarthen where you can get books for free. They are otherwise destined for landfill, so it's an awesome way to save the planet and all that. I googled it when I got back into range of Wifi, and found that they're all over the UK:

beta.healthyplanet.org

From what my mam tells me, you can have a maximum of three books per person per week - although that restriction doesn't apply to certain authors, who have their very own book mountains that you can shovel away by the dozen. My mam regularly drags the entire family there so she can fill a big bag :-)

I thought that was worth sharing :-) Anyone know of any similar schemes?

What I did on my Summer Holidays

11:36am, 26 Aug 2014
It's amazing how easily the summer holidays eats up blogging time :-)

A quick catch up then.

Our trip to Wales was a good one. I'm very glad that the boy brought his bathers with him:

they had loads of fun leaping into the pool, and doing lots of improbable water gymnastics. And I didn't have to get in ;-)

I've read lots of books - by my standards at least.

Last time I blogged, I was reading 'The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry'. I think he's planning on taking on the MdS this year. It was a lovely story - it pokes a bit of fun at those who like to have all the expensive equipment for hiking etc - and it's a model for anyone who's looking to pare away all the things that don't matter.

I then moved on to read 'To Kill A Mockingbird' - first time I've read it, and I hadn't seen the film, so I had no pre-conceptions other than the back-cover summary, and the recent Michael Gove palava. I enjoyed it - I particularly liked the way that Atticus tries to explain things to his kids, without unduly sugar-coating them - and I loved his reassuring "It's not time to worry yet".

Then 'Midnight Cowboy'. I'd seen the film as a teenager, but I think I was probably a bit preoccupied with fast forwarding to the sex bits - but the ending had also stuck with me. As a read, the whole thing was pretty sad.

Then (this is a proper 'What I Did On My Summer Holidays' essay after all) I read 'The Woman In Black' - it's so short it only took a day. We'd seen the film recently, so I had a fair idea of how it was going to play out, but unlike Salem's Lot (in which the movie was very faithful to the book), the story in the book was a bit of a different shape. I also think that Susan Hill did a better job of creating a scary atmosphere than Stephen King did in SL. I want to read "I'm the King of the Castle" again now (read it when I was in primary school).

And to complete the book update, I'm now onto 'The Silkworm', which is good fun so far. Katie read it on holiday, and saved me from reading the inside of the dust cover, which has a bit of a plot spoiler in it.

Here are my books for the year so far:
pinterest.com

In site news, there are a few interesting developments to report:

1) I've been collaborating with the folks at parkrun, and have been given access to the parkrun API. This means that our event listings now have *all* the parkruns in them, and it happens automatically.

2) I've also been working on a Fetch API. For the uninitiated, an API is just a way for other computer programs and websites to talk to our site. In practice, it means that we'll have more ways for you to get your data into Fetch from other sites, from other Apps, and off your watch - and it's a very important step towards having iPhone / Android apps of our own. So if you're a developer, or if you know a developer who might be interested in this, point them at this thread: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/viewtopic.php?id=56636

3) September marks ten years of Fetcheveryone! I've been speaking to the shirt manufacturer, and I'm hoping that the anniversary shirts will arrive next week with any luck. Katie and I will also be at this race: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/viewracedetails.php?id=103967 at Draycote Water, and it would be awesome to see some Fetchies there. The plan is to move on to the Dun Cow in Dunchurch for some grub and a pint afterwards.

4) We have two Fetchies running for us at the Transalpine Race - follow their blog here: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/transalpine

5) There are lots of ways you can help to Fetch Everyone :-) Have a read of this: http://www.fetcheveryone.com/cms-59

The running has gone pretty well, considering the fact that I've been all over the shop. I should get up to 60-odd miles for August.

There's a wounded pigeon in the garden. It's just standing around :-/ Our garden is walled on all sides, so it can't wander off, and we're keeping the dogs away from it. Have read on the 'net that it's very stressful for them to be 'captured' - so for now I've chucked a few bits of bread out there to give him the option of food. Any suggestions?

  • Have you got a very low statue it could sit on just in case it needs to relieve itself? Other than that I think I read somewhere that giving it a box to go and hide in if it wanted to might make things less stressful. If it's a racing pigeon it might have a little ID ring ring on its leg. The owner might come and collect it.

Local decoration

10:40pm, 13 Aug 2014
Visiting Wales brings some interesting reminders of our local dialect.

Before we left home, my dad called to remind me to bring our bathers.

As it's summer, we have to watch out for wasps (with an 'a' as in 'act').

And of course, we like a game of snooker (to rhyme with hooker).

In other news, my boy tried out my dads treadmill by himself, and found 7.5 mph a little too rich, and has some very smooth knees as a result.

My mam has been knitting lots of knick-knacks to sell for Katie to raise money for her charity fundraising for her marathon place. I called in to see my sister, and my mam gave me a bag of knits to take with me. My sister's colleague took the bag whilst my sister and I had a 10 min chat, and before I left, they had raised £16 for me to take back.

Mojitos and no mosquitos!

6:28pm, 12 Aug 2014
Long time no blog :-)

I tend not to say beforehand when I'm going away, just incase I jinx things and a bug rules the user experience for a week.

But... we've been to Crete for a week with our two little ones - and it was lovely - apartment right on the beach, turtle nests in the sand (but no turtles), snorkelling for the boys, all the mojitos you can drink, NO MOSQUITOS!, that sort of thing :-) I won't go on about it much :-)

There was a dress code in the hotel that wasn't mentioned in the brochure, namely that all the men have to wear long trousers to dinner. Of course, I hadn't packed ANY, but the hotel had a selection box of available options - so I spent most evenings in the most fabulous pair of royal blue power trousers. That aside, it was a fabulous venue.

Managed to get a few runs done - just a couple of 3 milers before the sun got going. All the local garden centres have tiny ornamental churches for (presumably) putting in your garden. They were quite cute looking.

We didn't venture very far, but I did get loads of reading done.

The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of A Window And Disappeared - I enjoyed big parts of this book, but I've found myself incapable of raving about it. What I liked best of all was the way in which the main character stayed calm in the face of tyrany - and of course, the feeling you get that the fact that someone is old means that their life is *FULL* of stories. A wee bit meandery though.

Under The Net - man wanders round pondering his own existence, drinking exhausting amounts of alcohol through a veil of cigarette smoke, and looking for people in big cities. Some nice bits about the very moment of experience, and how it links to a truth we can never put into words - if you're a Pirsig fan you'll love those bits. There's morals and ethics, and love, and gentle confusion, some Woosterian plans, and being true to oneself, and all that sort of thing. There's a very noble dog called Mars who sounds ace, and a wise woman whom everyone confides in. Enjoyable, reminiscent of the only Sartre I've read (The Age of Reason), and you feel like a bit of an intellectual when you're reading it.

I'm now about a hundred pages into The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which is totally lovely. I *know* it's going to have moments of real sadness, but it's impossible not to be very much on Harold's side.

There's a new article for the site:

http://www.fetcheveryone.com/cms-59

and more on the way.

Cake-athlon

6:18pm, 2 Aug 2014
Today has been a bit of an adventure :-)

Dropped Katie off at the train station at 7am, then after a bit of faffing around at the house I headed off to Northampton. I knew I'd be cutting it fine to get to parkrun, but I finally got the car parked at 8:58, on the far side of the fields from where the runners were gathering. So my 5k started with a very abrupt warm up as I legged it. Half way there of course, I realised I'd left my barcode in the car.

Made it on time, and popped up next to Fizz - I was very tempted to get revenge for Silerstone 10k where she popped up next to Katie and gave her a shock - but I couldn't bring myself to do it :-)

It's a good course (ever so slightly long for me, but that's only because I stopped at the car on the first lap to get my bar code). I ran the first mile with Fizz, then upped the speed a bit, and enjoyed a bit of a sweat! It's a very relaxed event - laid back - recommended :-)

Wandered round and chatted for a bit (including seeing Mrs Jigs clapping everyone in at the funnel), and then it was the monthly Magic Mile. I was a bit bushwhackered by this point, so I ran with Elsie Too, and hopefully shouted all the right things - and she turned in a fabulous 7:30 :-)

Then it was cake!

Cakes what I ate:

Victoria Sponge with Magic Golden Balls on it
Lemon Drizzle cake. Nom.
Chocolate cake (2 slices)
Flapjack (mmm, syrupy)
Chocolate chip banana loaf
Several cubes of pistachio fudge :-)
A fistful of mini Cornish pasties!

It was lovely to have a chat with some very familiar faces (if you ever need a motivational person to yell at you in the final sprint of a 5k, then I highly recommend Corona!). We stayed until the rain drove us away, and I wandered back to my car with my blanket around my shoulders like a Big Issue salesman.

Big sugar crash on the way home :-O

Got back, finished off 'Salem's Lot - it was a good exciting climax in the end. I think sometimes his over-fancy prose comes off, and sometimes it doesn't. There were plenty of good bits, and none of us are perfect. I think the next one of his I'll tackle will be the book of short stories that includes 'Stand By Me'. But not yet, I need to read some non-horror first. More on my next choice of book tomorrow :-)

I've also put the pre-order for Fetch Shirts and Vests into Ron Hill Specials today - there are a *small* number of extra ones included, in case you haven't had the chance to order - but a max of 2-3 in most sizes.

Picked up t'wife from the station - it was lovely to have her back from work - and it's pork chops and mash for tea :-)

You're gonna get through a lot of pages in that time, I can tell ya! I'm loving your book reviews - could you C&P them into an article so we can find them foreeeevvvvaaaa?!
