How to Calculate Age Grading for Runners: A Simple Guide

TL;DR: Age grading lets you compare running performances fairly across different ages and sexes. Just divide the world-best time for your category by your actual time, multiply by 100, and boom - that’s your age grade. Or better yet, use our free calculator to do the maths for you.

Ever looked at race results and thought, “Hang on - how do I compare with someone twice my age?”

Well, good news. Age grading is here to save the day.

It’s a brilliant way to level the playing field. Whether you're a teenager or collecting your free bus pass, age grading gives you a fair way to compare running performances across ages and sexes.

Wait - what is age grading?

Glad you asked.

Age grading gives you a percentage score based on how your time compares to the world’s best for your age and sex. Basically, it says, “Here's how close you are to the best possible performance for someone like you.”

It's the great equaliser - and it works surprisingly well.

Here’s how it works:

You just need two bits of info:

  • Standard Time – the best-known time for your age/sex over that distance
  • Your Time – the time you actually ran

Then plug them into this simple formula:

Age Grade (%) = (Standard Time / Your Time) × 100

So let’s say you’re a 50-year-old who runs a 5k in 25 minutes. The best-known time for your category might be 17 minutes. That gives:

(17 / 25) × 100 = 68%

And there you have it - your age grade is 68%.

But what does that actually mean?

Great question.

Here’s a rough guide:

  • 90%+ = World class
  • 80–89% = National level
  • 70–79% = Competitive club runner
  • 60–69% = Decent recreational runner
  • Below 60% = Still out there doing it 💪

In other words, it gives you something to aim at - and a fair way to track your own progress over time.

So... how do I calculate mine?

You could hunt through official age grading tables…

...or you could use our free Age Grading Calculator. It’s quick, easy, and no spreadsheets required.

Just pop in your race distance, time, age and sex - and boom, you’ll get your percentage grade.

Why should I care about age grading?

Honestly? Because it’s fun. And useful.

It takes the pressure off trying to beat your younger self every year, and replaces it with something way more realistic: running your best, right now.

Plus, it adds a bit of spice to friendly competitions. The fastest runner isn’t always the highest graded one - which is great for bragging rights at the club night 🍻

What next?

Simple:

Try the calculator and see how you’re doing.

Then share your results, challenge a friend, or just keep it to yourself as a quiet nod that - yep - you’re still smashing it 💥

Go on, give it a go. You might surprise yourself.
